Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic

Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic

About

The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic (ADDC) is the flagship clinic of the School Psychology Services Center at Mississippi State University (MSU). It is currently the only comprehensive pediatric psychological service center in northern Mississippi.

As an outreach, service, training, and research clinic run by the MSU College of Education’s Department of Counseling, Higher Education Leadership, Educational Psychology, and Foundations, the ADDC provides comprehensive behavioral, social-emotional, and functional skills interventions to persons with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Goals and Services

The ADDC provides comprehensive behavioral and academic services to children, adolescents, and emerging adults with a variety of disabilities, along with their families. It has a tri-fold mission of 1) providing high quality services to individuals with disabilities, 2) training future professionals, and 3) conducting research.

The services of the ADDC are vital to families and individuals in Mississippi and beyond. Individuals exhibiting any type of developmental disability including but not limited to, Autism Spectrum Disorders, genetic disorders (e.g. Down Syndrome, CHARGE Syndrome), developmental delays, cognitive impairments, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral palsy, and specific learning disabilities are provided with services to meet individual needs. In addition to individual and group-based interventions, the ADDC also provides comprehensive psychological and psycho-educational assessment services. These assessments are required for children to receive special education services at their schools and to qualify for additional state and federal services.

Additionally, the ADDC provides the Autism Liaisons program. The Autism Liaisons program provides support to degree-seeking MSU undergraduate and graduate students who have a diagnosis of autism or a related disability to ensure they are able to have the same opportunities for success in college as their peers. Mississippi State University is the only university in the country conducting an Autism Liaisons program for its students free of cost to guide their academic and career success.

The ADDC also places top priority on the training of professionals to create greater accommodation through quality service and care. In addition to extending services and training programs to families of the individuals involved, the ADDC also conducts ongoing direct training for approximately 40-50 graduate students and more than 50 undergraduate students, preparing future professionals to help meet the needs of the state and region.

Many research labs have been added to support the necessary services and needs of our clients across the Institute. For example, the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Lab provides clinical-based research to advance the healthy nutritional intake for children on the autism spectrum and those with related conditions.

The Lab provides structured learning in the best practices of applied behavior analysis techniques to help children and adolescents aged 2-18 years old who do not eat enough. The Lab provides one-of-a-kind treatment in the state to produce lasting improvements in eating behavior and a decrease in negative mealtime related behaviors (i.e. tantrums).
