About

For over two decades, the T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability (TKMC) has provided comprehensive, multi-disciplinary evaluations and services to remove limitations through the application of assistive technology, evidenced-based practice, training, and educational supports. The comprehensive nature of services allows individuals across the lifespan to participate in educational, vocational, and leisure activities to the fullest degree they choose, while continuing to advance research in disability.

The TKMC has a wide variety of services for individuals with disabilities of all ages. Historically founded as an assistive technology center, the roots of assistive technology carry deep in the center's work. The center provides comprehensive assistive technology evaluations for individuals with disabilities of all ages and needs. This may include training and computer access, reading supports, augmentative and alternative communication devices (AAC devices), seating and mobility equipment or visuals to support the individual in their various environments (home, school, hospital, and community). TKMC is a leader in ensuring technology needs are individualized to the client and work with many different vendors to help clients reach their goals.

The TKMC also provides a number of comprehensive services including psychological and psychoeducational evaluations for persons with disabilities or suspected of needs, behavioral therapy, comprehensive reading services, a special needs school, and a recreational art program for persons with disabilities. Psychological and ABA services can be funded through insurance.

Spotlight: TKMC Early Intervention

For over two decades, the TKMC has shined a light on the importance of early intervention. TKMC houses an early intervention team currently serving as a model for the First Steps early intervention program in Mississippi (ages birth to three). From evaluations in the child’s natural environment (home or daycare), to comprehensive service coordination with highly trained therapists, children receive services to need their individualized needs. When more intensive services are required, TKMC houses a special needs preschool serving children with a wide range of developmental disabilities and delays, including autism and rare genetic conditions. This robust team focuses on functional living and safety skills such as increasing functional communication, safety in community settings, and beginning academics. Children with more complex needs may also benefit from services in the special needs school designed to serve the K-12 population.
